Gardening For Wildlife, #23 Healing Gardens
July 09, 2007

My days begin to grow short as we have passed the summer solstice.

Living on the western edge of a time zone helps as I enjoy the daylight on the evening side of my days.

Right now, sunrise is after 6:00 AM and sunset is still later than 9:20 PM.

I'm rarely up that early, but I am out that late.

Four tenths of an inch.

Two rainfalls to get .4" .

Not much, but we'll take it here.

Anything is a blessing during drought like conditions.

Still mighty dry and hot over the weekend.

Lake Michigan ruins many a good thunderstorm, it also lowers temperatures.

When temperatures reach the upper 90's and low triple digits on the west side of the big lake, we are usually several degrees cooler when that hot air mass reaches us.

Newsletters are supposed to be news worthy.

This letter may not be as news worthy, but I hope you find it a bit uplifting.

If so, I did my job.

I came across this saying awhile back, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I was blessed, I was able to live it.

Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education. -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

Several juveniles are coming to the yard and feeding stations as they beg to be fed.

I get a big kick out of that.

Yep, another source of entertainment for me.

Like coming home from college or work and saying

I'm a big boy, yet still I want my folks to care for me.

Yep, this is one of the busier times of year for birds in my yard and at my feeders.

Are you noticing fewer bird songs these days?

As birds begin to wind down on mating and keeping territories, songs become less.

Fewer robins to serenade me.

Cardinal tunes are less, as it is with several of my feathered friends.

Are you noticing fewer tunes with your bluebirds, Varied thrush, meadowlarks and other birds?

Mama duck's three remaining babies are growing feathers now. I'm glad they made it this far.

Canada geese are every where.

I don't mind a few, but flocks of 40 or 50 can make a real mess in a hurry.

When geese come to the yard now, Keet gets to chase them.

These birds could beat her up with little effort. However, Predator and prey comes into play.

The instinct of a goose says to flee a dog no matter what.

The geese stand up to me yet run from an eight pound dog.

I loaded up on sunflower seed this past week.

If the cost continues to go up, I too will offer seed certain times of the day.

I've said this before, but you can train your birds to your schedule.

Have you noticed how more hospitals and other institutes have what are called healing gardens?

What took them so long,?

Must be they finally realized that sanitary and sterile conditions aren't always healthy.

Anyone that gardens knows the healing and calming effects of gardens and gardening.

Not to mention the physical positives as well.

Grants and other moneys costing hundreds of thousands of dollars go into researching such things.

Funny thing is, they didn't bother asking real gardeners did they?

Gardens and Nature have long been known to have calming effects and other healing powers on people.

Physically, mentally and emotionally.

Gardens are good for the soul.

So why is it such a huge revelation to the medical field ?

Did we have to wait for them to tell us that?

I find that gardening for wildlife is even better yet.

Do you visit your yard and gardens often?

Do you notice the calming effect on you?

Blood pressure may lower.

A smile appears on your face as you watch the wildlife around you.

Maybe you have the sight and sound of water ...... now that is healing.

How does this sound to you?

I think I'll go outside and heal some.

Maybe I'll go out back and visit my personal doctor.

Could it be the healing powers of God as we lower the personal walls that surround us?

Anyone that has a yard or garden can have their personal healing garden.

Any place you feel comforted and can relax.

Maybe you have a bench or other place to sit.

A wind chime could add to the soothing and calming after a long day.

Maybe you simply need to be still and feel "Nature".

There isn't a special layout or design for a healing garden.

Each one is different, yet the results can be the same.

Any place in your yard or gardens that makes you feel at ease or special can be your healing garden.

Walk outside and feel yourself relax.

Feel yourself as you energize.

Gardens, any garden can be a healing garden.

For me, birds, butterflies and other wildlife make it more special.

Yes, gardening for wildlife has many benefits.

Be sure to add something special to your garden.

Add your personality.

It may be a favorite color.

Maybe special plants or flowers.

A special gift or memory can be a special addition to any garden. keeps adding to their list, get your freebies today.

A few of you gave me your favorite bird last week.

Thank You,

Next week I will write them for you, but would like a few more.

If you want to give me your favorite bird, please do so.

Don't be shy!

You favorite bird or birds along with your first name, city and state or province.

Let's have some fun.

Well, it's time to fly for now.

Smiles are free, yet often they are priceless.

Smile your best this week and smile and a stranger.

Until next time

"Treat the earth well:

It was not given to you by your parents,

It was loaned to you by your children.

We do not inherit the Earth from our

Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children."

Ancient Indian Proverb

Your friend indeed,

Ron Patterson
